So this is Foucault's seventh adventure: his character with pen in hand wondering, first of all, what it is he is holding, the bread or the wine. And he has to conclude that it is the wine. And if it is the wine, then he can't be ignorant.
He accordingly goes on to consider the Greek citizen, who would only be guided by law, that is, respect for the force controlled by the state, and persuasion. And furthermore, he must accept the notion, because of his position, that the gadfly of the state was persuaded toward his own death.
But if he has situated himself in the realm of persuasion, he suddenly wonders if he can persuade the gadfly of the state not to have to die. And he wonders if this makes him a teacher.
